During a 2024 Comic Con Liverpool panel appearance, Finn Jones, the actor who portrayed Danny Rand/Iron Fist in Netflix’s original Defenders universe series, officially shared his long-gestating pitch for a high-octane face-off between his character and Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi in the mainstream Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jones, who has repeatedly expressed eagerness to reprise his role as the protector of K’un-Lun since Netflix canceled its Marvel slate in 2019, noted that the ongoing Multiverse Saga has already paved the way for his return, with fellow Defenders cast members Charlie Cox (Daredevil) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Kingpin) already integrated into core MCU projects across film and Disney+.
Jones emphasized that the narrative and thematic parallels between Danny Rand and Shang-Chi make their pairing a natural, fan-pleasing choice for Marvel’s upcoming slate. Both characters rank among the most formidable hand-to-hand combatants in Marvel canon, with deep ties to ancient, secret mystical societies: Danny draws his supernatural strength from the Heart of the Dragon of K’un-Lun, while Shang-Chi wields the cosmic Ten Rings inherited from his father Wenwu, leader of the centuries-old Ten Rings organization. Their contrasting backstories also create rich dramatic tension: Danny is a privileged New York shipping heir who left his old life behind to train for a decade in the hidden dimension of K’un-Lun, while Shang-Chi is a former child assassin who ran from his abusive family legacy to build a quiet, ordinary life before being drawn back into the world of international conflict.
The actor confirmed that he has already shared the face-off concept with Marvel Studios executives during a recent industry event, and has been blown away by the immediate fan support for the idea. As of press time, the #IronFistVsShangChi hashtag has accumulated over 14 million impressions on X (formerly Twitter), with thousands of fans sharing custom fan art, fight scene edits, and plot pitches for the potential crossover. Simu Liu, who debuted as Shang-Chi in 2021’s *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings*, has previously spoken about his admiration for the Netflix Defenders franchise, noting in a 2023 interview that he would “jump at the chance” to share the screen with any of its core cast members.
While Marvel has not yet announced official plans for Iron Fist’s MCU return, industry insiders note that the studio is currently expanding its street-level hero content with upcoming projects like *Daredevil: Born Again*, making a Danny Rand appearance far more likely than in previous phases. A showdown between the two martial arts heroes would not only deliver groundbreaking, stunt-heavy action sequences, but also offer a chance to bridge the gap between the MCU’s large-scale cosmic storylines and its smaller, character-driven street-level canon.

As a long-time fan of the Netflix Defenders universe, I’ve been waiting years for Danny Rand to join the main MCU roster. A fight between him and Shang-Chi would have next-level choreography—their martial arts styles are so distinct, it’d easily be the best action sequence in the entire Multiverse Saga if they do it right.
People forget these two have crossed over so many times in the comics! They’ve even teamed up to take down the Hand together before. I’d love it if the face-off turned into a full buddy team-up down the line, they have such perfect odd-couple energy.
This is such a smart way to reintroduce Iron Fist without forcing a whole new solo series first. The fan demand is clearly there, and pairing him with Shang-Chi lets writers fix the missteps of the original Netflix show while leaning into the parts of Danny’s character that fans actually love. Marvel needs to greenlight this ASAP.
