The announcement has drawn widespread celebration across the small Pacific nation, as Ngatupuna becomes the first lawn bowls athlete to earn the prestigious honor in the country’s 52-year history of participating in the Commonwealth Games. Ngatupuna first took up lawn bowls at age 26 at a local community club in Rarotonga, the largest of the Cook Islands, after being introduced to the sport by his grandfather. Over the past three decades, he has represented the Cook Islands at four previous Commonwealth Games, with a career-best finish of 8th place in the men’s pairs event at the 2018 Gold Coast Games, and has won seven gold medals at the Pacific Games across singles, pairs, and team lawn bowls competitions. Outside of competition, he has run a free youth lawn bowls training program for local children across the Cook Islands for the past 11 years, mentoring more than 120 young athletes, 3 of whom have gone on to represent the country at regional international events. Speaking at the flag bearer announcement event in Rarotonga, Ngatupuna said he was overwhelmed by the honor. “When I got the call from the committee, I actually cried a little bit. I’ve spent my whole life playing this sport I love, never expecting to get to lead my entire country out in front of a global audience at the Commonwealth Games. This isn’t just my honor—it’s for every lawn bowls player in our islands, for every young kid who plays a niche sport and wonders if they’ll ever get recognized for their hard work, and for all our small island communities that support our athletes even when we have far fewer resources than larger nations.” Cook Islands Olympic Committee president Manoa Teaiwa noted that Ngatupuna was selected from a shortlist of 6 outstanding athletes for the role. “Phillip embodies everything we want our national representatives to stand for: humility, sportsmanship, dedication to lifting up the next generation, and pride in our Cook Islands identity. He has never turned down a chance to volunteer at local sports events, never argues with officials or opponents, and always makes time to talk to young fans who come to watch his matches. He is the perfect person to carry our flag.” The Cook Islands is sending a 22-athlete delegation to this year’s Commonwealth Games, competing across 7 sports including lawn bowls, athletics, swimming, rugby sevens, weightlifting, boxing, and squash.
