Semiconductor substrate manufacturer AXT Inc. saw its share price skyrocket more than 31% in after-hours trading on August 6, 2024, following the release of its second-quarter fiscal 2024 financial results that handily beat Wall Street consensus estimates, driven almost entirely by surging demand for components used in AI infrastructure buildouts.
For the three months ended June 30, 2024, AXT reported total revenue of $82.3 million, representing a 47% year-over-year increase and surpassing analyst projections of $71.2 million. Adjusted diluted earnings per share came in at $0.42, more than double the $0.19 reported in the same quarter last year and 50% higher than the consensus estimate of $0.28. Gross margins also expanded significantly, rising 720 basis points year over year to 42.1%, driven by a shift to higher-margin product lines tailored for AI applications.
Management noted that revenue from AI-related products accounted for 58% of total Q2 revenue, up from just 19% in Q2 2023, as global cloud providers and tech giants accelerate construction of AI data centers to support large language model training and inference workloads. AXT’s core products, including gallium arsenide substrates and indium phosphide wafers, are critical components in high-speed optical transceivers, power semiconductors, and radio frequency devices that form the backbone of modern AI infrastructure. The company counts leading optical module manufacturers such as Finisar, Lumentum, and Coherent among its top customers, all of which have reported record order backlogs tied to AI spending from firms like NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Google.
AXT CEO Morris Young highlighted in the earnings call that the company invested over $45 million in capacity expansion between 2022 and 2023, positioning it to capture a larger share of the fast-growing AI component market. “We began scaling production of high-purity compound substrates two years ago when we saw early signs of growing demand for advanced hardware to support AI workloads,” Young said. “Our order book is currently filled through the first quarter of 2025, and we are on track to expand production capacity by 35% by the end of 2024 to meet unmet demand.”
Industry analysts project that global spending on AI infrastructure will exceed $500 billion in 2024, with demand for compound semiconductor substrates growing at a compound annual growth rate of 62% through 2027. Year to date, AXT’s share price has risen more than 187%, outperforming the broader semiconductor sector by more than 120 percentage points.

Daniel Ives, Senior Equity Analyst at Wedbush Securities: 'AXT’s Q2 beat is far from a temporary blip. The company’s dominant position in the compound semiconductor substrate space places it directly in the middle of the $1 trillion global AI infrastructure buildout we expect over the next three years. We are raising our 12-month price target for AXT from $18 to $27 based on the unprecedented visibility into their future order flow.'
Sarah Chen, Independent Tech Investor and AXT shareholder since 2020: 'I’ve watched AXT operate under the radar for years as they poured resources into R&D for next-generation substrates long before AI became a mainstream investment trend. Their ability to pivot their product mix to prioritize high-margin AI components ahead of the demand boom is a masterclass in strategic planning, and I’m planning to hold my shares for at least another two years as AI data center spending shows no signs of cooling off.'
Tom Reynolds, Semiconductor Industry Analyst and founder of Chip Tech Insider: 'The most notable metric in AXT’s Q2 report is the 58% of revenue coming from AI-related products, a threefold increase from a year ago. That rapid shift in product mix, paired with expanding gross margins, proves that the company isn’t just benefiting from broad AI hype – it’s executing on a clear strategy to capture value from the AI hardware supply chain. This is the kind of operational performance that sets long-term winners apart in the competitive semiconductor space.'
