The high humidity will make perceived temperatures 6 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit higher than actual air temperatures, with heat index values in parts of Texas, Louisiana and Florida potentially exceeding 105°F, creating elevated risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke for vulnerable groups including the elderly, children and people working outdoors. By Wednesday evening, the warm humid air will collide with a slow-moving cold front traveling south from Canada, triggering the first round of convective storms. Initial storm cells will bring short bursts of heavy rainfall, wind gusts up to 70 mph, and hail up to 1 inch in diameter in isolated areas; flash flood watches have already been issued for 27 counties across the Appalachian region and low-lying coastal areas, where accumulated rainfall in 2 hours could reach 3 inches. From Thursday through the end of the weekend, the storm system will remain nearly stationary over the eastern half of the country, bringing average daily rainfall of 1 to 3 inches, with total accumulated rainfall in parts of Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia potentially hitting 8 inches, far exceeding the 1.2 inch weekly average for mid-July recorded over the past decade. The NWS has urged residents to avoid all non-essential outdoor activities including hiking, camping and water sports during storm periods, and advised households in flood-prone zones to prepare 72-hour emergency kits with drinking water, non-perishable food, battery-powered flashlights and first-aid supplies, and monitor local weather alerts closely for evacuation orders. Officials also noted that sustained high humidity after the storms may raise the risk of indoor mold growth, advising residents to ventilate and dry indoor spaces promptly once weather conditions improve.

@HamiltonCountyRescueMike: As a first responder, I can’t emphasize this enough: never try to drive or walk through flooded roads, even if the water looks shallow. It only takes 6 inches of moving water to knock an adult off their feet, and 12 inches to carry away most standard passenger cars.
